Ride in the safe confines of an arena when first loping.
The inside leg is sometimes called the “leading leg” by trainers. Your horse will be better balanced if he is on the correct lead. When you compete in western riding classes, the judge expects you to be on the correct lead when he asks for the lope. This is why it’s important to learn the cues that tell your horse to take off on the correct lead. If you have to return to the jog to pick up the correct lead, you probably won’t get a ribbon in your class.
If you’re having a hard time getting your horse to pick up the correct lead, lunge him without a rider for a few days. If he has problems picking up the lead on the lunge line, he may have back or leg problems that are affecting his performance and overall health. If you suspect that your horse is uncomfortable, call your veterinarian for an evaluation.
If your horse picks up the lead easily on the lunge line, his rider (that’s you) is probably the problem. If your position is not correct or you don’t know how to cue your horse the correct way, your horse may have difficulty getting balanced enough to pick up the correct lead. He also may not understand what you are asking. You might need to sign up for some sessions with a reputable trainer to get a better handle on the challenge of leading. The extra time and money can pay off in the long run. Explain your problem, and let the trainer ride your horse and watch you and your horse in action. He may be able to suggest some training exercises to solve your lead problems; and he may also work on your position in the saddle.
